“I’d rather do it with you, that way I’m more likely to honor the commitment”
I said this last week, and it’s so true. It’s too easy when you make a commitment to yourself to break it; to find something that is more important.
It also applies in many different scenarios, from exercising and taking time for yourself to giving yourself time to review your future and maybe try some different options.
So, how do we make sure we honor commitments that we make to ourselves?
Blocking out time in your calendar can work, but that’s still a form of commitment to yourself only.
We can use other people to help us. This is an obvious and probably most effective way. We’re making the commitment about more than just ourselves.
And this can take lots of different forms:
✳️ We can book an appointment with someone who can help us honor that commitment whether that’s a professional, a colleague or a friend.
✳️ We can make an external booking, such as booking a co-working space.
✳️ We can enroll on a relevant course or activity.
Committing money to something often helps us to view it differently, but this doesn’t have to cost you anything:
✳️ We can ask a friend or family member to check we did what we said we were going to.
✳️ We can use rewards to help keep us committed (I quite like this one 🙂).
If you have another way of making sure you honor the commitments to make to yourself I’d love to hear it.
